Aldosterone synthase is a member of the cytochrome P450 superfamily of enzymes. It is encoded on chromosome 8q22 by the CYP11B2 gene, and is expressed in the zona glomerulosa of the adrenal cortex. It synthesizes aldosterone to regulate electrolyte balance and blood pressure. Inhibition of aldosterone synthase reduces aldosterone concentrations in plasma and tissues to treat hypertension, heart failure, and renal disorders.
